Why did World War I start?

World War I started because long-term tensions in Europe built up over time, and then one trigger event caused everything to explode into war.

The 4 main causes (easy to remember: M.A.I.N.)

1. Militarism

  • Countries built huge armies and weapons
  • Everyone was ready for war and expected it

2. Alliances

  • Countries made agreements to defend each other
  • If one country went to war, others were pulled in → like a domino effect

3. Imperialism

  • Countries competed for land, power, and colonies
  • This created rivalry and tension

4. Nationalism

  • Strong pride in one’s country
  • Led to competition and conflict (especially in the Balkans)

The Spark (Immediate Cause)

  • In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian nationalistAustria-Hungary blamed Serbia and declared war
  • Because of alliances, many countries were quickly dragged into the conflict

Treaty of Versailles 1919
