Review of Doc/Book:

"If I Go Missing"

Brianna Jonnie with Nahanni Shingoose, art by Nshannacappo

Paragraph Reflection Question: Brianna Jonnie — a letter (excerpt below) that went viral and was also the basis of a documentary film.

In her letter, Jonnie calls out the authorities for neglecting to immediately investigate missing Indigenous people and urges them to "not treat me as the Indigenous person I am proud to be," if she were to be reported missing.

Read this excerpt from her letter:

Excerpted from Brianna Jonnie’s “If I Go Missing” letter.

Dear Chief of Police,

I am an Indigenous girl. I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a cousin, a friend…

If I go missing, please look for me.

I am not involved in drugs or alcohol. I am not a runaway…

If I go missing, I beg of you, do not treat me as the Indigenous person I am proud to be.

Provide details that humanize me—not just my height, my hair, or my ethnicity.

If I go missing and my body is found, please tell my mom you are sorry. Tell her I asked to be buried in my red dress…

Complete your Reflection Response:

Journal Reflection Question:

Brianna Jonnie’s letter went viral because it powerfully calls attention to how missing Indigenous people are often not treated with urgency or care. In her letter, she asks authorities to not judge her or treat her differently because she is Indigenous if she were to go missing.

Paragraph Reflection Question:

Brianna Jonnie’s letter, speaks directly to systemic neglect surrounding missing Indigenous people. By stating that she does not want to be treated differently because she is Indigenous — even though she is proud of her identity — Jonnie highlights tensions between identity, bias, and justice.

Reflect on the following: TO ASSIST WITH YOUR PARAGRAPH - 5 sentences min!!!

  • What does Brianna Jonnie’s request reveal about systemic racism and unequal treatment?
  • Why is it significant that she is both proud of her Indigenous identity and concerned about how it might affect an investigation?
  • How does her letter connect to broader themes of voice, resistance, and responsibility toward Indigenous communities?

Support your ideas with thoughtful reasoning and personal or cultural reflection, where appropriate.

You can complete this via paper upon your return to class after your viewing of the Red Dress Installation.
