Shipping - Moving forward with greener options?
Where Things Stand Currently.
-
True solar or electric cargo ships on major international shipping lanes aren’t yet widespread, mainly because long ocean crossings require very large energy storage and infrastructure.
-
However, hybrid solar–electric designs and fully electric vessels for shorter or inland routes are emerging as early adopters in sustainable shipping.
In summary:
- Solar-assisted cargo vessels are already in service (e.g., Blue Marlin). Germany/Netherlands - inland channels.
- Fully electric ocean-going cargo ships may be feasible within the next few years as battery tech advances. (Some inland channels in China using this option currently)
- The industry is moving toward greener propulsion, combining solar, electric power, alternative fuels, and efficiency improvements.
